I’ve loved ‘Ya Msafer Wahdak’ for years, so getting to dance it live at Jamballah NW in Portland felt like such a treat.
I’ve loved this song for many years, but the stars hadn’t aligned for it to make it to the stage until I found this costume and immediately knew they belonged together. Jamballah NW is the Portland belly dance festival—a warm, supportive annual gathering that brings together fusion, folk, and raqs sharqi dancers from across our community. Over the years I’ve taught raqs assaya (Upper Egyptian stick dance), baladi, raqs sharqi combinations and rhythms, and veil there, and it’s always a joy to be in the studio with dancers of many styles and levels.
If you’d like to bring me to your town or festival for workshops in raqs sharqi, raqs assaya, or related styles, feel free to get in touch. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this performance to one of the most powerful classics in Egyptian music.
