Continuous Hot Percolation Extraction
(Hot Continuous Counter-current Extraction /Soxhlet Extraction/Soxhlation)
Extraction is the process of efficiently dissolving and separating the desired chemical constituents from the crude drug with the use of solvent/s.
Mechanism of Extraction
During the extraction of Phytoconstituent from the plant material, initially solvent penetrates in to the solid matrix, then the solubilisation of solutes in the solvent takes place. Later on the solute (soluble phytocontituents) diffuses out of the solid matrix and finally extracted solutes are separated out by solvent evaporation.

Continuous Hot Percolation Extraction
In the soxhlet extraction, the plant material is continuously flushed with the fresh solvent. But the fresh solvent is formed by the boiling the solvent containing the extracted analytes. Means in this process the same quantity of solvent is made to circulate through extractor containing drug by evaporation and subsequent condensation.

Working of Soxhlet Apparatus
The Coarsely powdered crude drug is placed in a porous bag or “thimble” made of strong filter paper, which is then placed in Soxhlet extractor.
Set the Soxhlet assembly on heating mantle and add extracting solvent in round bottom flak, flask is heated, and solvent vapors condense in condenser.
The condensed vapor (hot extracting solvent) drips into the thimble containing the crude drug, and extracts it.
When the level of liquid in chamber rises to the top of siphon tube, the liquid contents of chamber siphon into flask.
During each cycle, pure hot solvent dissolves some of the phytocontituents and siphoned back to the round bottom flask.
