Melksham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 25 miles southwest of Swindon, is the town of Melksham.

Geographically, Melksham is situated along the River Avon (which feeds into Bristol, so as not to confuse it with other rivers of the same name), and in between the Cotswolds to the north and west, and the North Wessex Downs to the east.

At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels. This dates back to the 12th century, with significant additions from the 14th to 16th centuries, and extensive remodelling from 1845.

In 1219 a market charter was granted to Melksham. The town's historic weaving industry dates back to the 14th century or earlier, reaching a peak during the 16th and 17th centuries, and eventually declining in the 19th century, with the town's last mill, the Matravers Mill, closing in 1888.

In 1815 the Melksham Spa Company was founded by a group of wealthy textile merchants. This followed an accidental discovery of two natural springs during an unsuccessful attempt to find coal. Plans were put in place to create a spa resort to rival nearby Bath, however very little came of this aside from a crescent with six semi-detached houses, a pump room and private hot and cold baths.

In 1848 the railway arrived in Melksham courtesy of the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway. The station was closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts. However, in 1985 it was reopened after a successful campaign. The station of today is situated on the Wessex Main Line which runs between Southampton and Bristol.
