Gillingham, Dorset Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Dorset, and around 30 miles northwest of Bournemouth is the town of Gillingham (not to be confused with Gillingham in Kent, although the two differ in pronunciation. Gillingham in Dorset is pronounced with a hard 'g' at the front).

Geographically, Gillingham is situated just outside the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, with the Shreen, a tributary of the River Stour, running through it. Edward the Confessor is said to have been declared king in Gillingham in 1042.

At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Mary. This dates from the 14th century, with a surviving chancel from the same century, although the main body of the church is from the 19th century. The church is Grade I listed.

In 1859 the railway arrived in Gillingham courtesy of the Salisbury and Yeovil Railway. The station of today is situated on the West of England Line which runs between Basingstoke and Exeter St Davids.
