The restaurant chain, McDonald's has conquered a new frontier.

Its opened its first restaurant in Colombia - and one thousand people were on hand to celebrate the grand opening.

There was no need for the company name - the presence of a giant inflatable clown on top of a downtown shopping mall in Bogota was sufficient to herald the arrival of what is probably America's greatest export after Coca Cola.

Although it already has 16-thousand similar restaurants around the globe, the launch of its latest venture in Colombia was treated with as much reverence as the opening of a religious institution.

Despite McDonald's runaway success in other South American countries such as Argentina, Peru and Chile, the company was praying for another success in this part of the continent.

But with a queue round the block from early morning the restaurant need not have any worries on its first day's takings.

The truth is I've been here since 6.15 this morning and I'm here to eat the first Big Mac made here in Colombia.

For some customers new to the delights of the Big Mac, shake and fries - the choice of hamburgers could be bewildering.

While others devoured their new found cuisine with gusto.

The 50 (m) million dollars invested in the launch of this new restaurant also includes the infrastructure needed to open a chain of fast-food venues across the country.
