Joanna visits with Dr. Katie VanValin, University of Kentucky Extension Beef Specialist to talk about mineral supplementation for cattle.
Minerals are essential nutrients, meaning they must be supplied in the diet of cattle, but make up a relatively small portion of the diet. However, minerals are critical in supporting things like growth, reproduction, and health, which are traits that are important to cattle producers. When cattle do not receive enough of a particular mineral in their diet, a deficiency can develop which can negatively impact growth, reproduction, and health. Here in south central Kentucky cattle can especially be at risk for developing copper and selenium deficiencies. However, it is important to note that when it comes to minerals, too much is not a good thing, and could result in toxicity. It is important to supply cattle with a complete, high quality mineral supplement 365 days of the year, and remember that not all mineral supplements are created equal. Free choice mineral supplements may contain minerals that come from a different source, so it is important that producers read the labels on bags of mineral to know what they are purchasing. This time of year, as we come into the spring calving season it is important to remember to supply cows with a high-magnesium mineral supplement starting 30-days before calving and throughout the spring to prevent development of grass tetany.
