Описание: On September 17, 1859, Joshua Abraham Norton of San Francisco published a notice in a local newspaper proclaiming himself Emperor of the United States. A businessman who during his career had won, then lost, two fortunes. For the next 20 years, Emperor Norton issued proclamations on issues large and small. Clad in imperial regalia, he was a familiar figure on the city’s streets. The Emperor was surprisingly progressive in his views regarding the rights of Blacks, Native Americans, and San Francisco’s large Asian population and envisioned later developments such as the Oakland Bay Bridge and the BART Tunnel. Historian Neal Graffy presents more about this fascinating eccentric, Emperor Norton I.
