"San Francisco By the Golden Gate" is a vintage California travelogue produced by Philip M. Brown that dates to 1932. Tales of California’s silver past unfold as the camera travels to famous sites including Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate (where the Golden Gate Bridge was built in 1933), the long wharf running into the San Francisco Bay, towns within Marin County as well as the old sloop Gjoa by the Bay among others. Sights and sounds of the golden west are accompanied by classical tunes and modern narration. San Fran was emerging into an era of prosperity into the 1920's and 1930's. Opening footage swings in with light clouds over an aerial shot of the city near the golden gate (:23). The narrator states the area was settled by two 'monks' in 1776 (:34). The area was in fact settled by Spanish settlers in 1776. History continues into 1846 (:50) and the Gold Rush of 1848. Market Street; a major Californian thoroughfare springs from the Embarcadero in front of the Ferry building carrying on southwest through downtown and into the Twin Peaks neighborhood (1:13). Market cuts through the heart of the financial district (1:21). Sky scrapers prick the sky. The clock tower and ferry building (1:34) swing into view. Long piers run into the bay (1:41). Ships from around the globe dock at the harbor (1:55). The camera runs around Telegraph Hill; the hill known for having been around the world (2:02). The stunning fisherman's wharf is pictured (2:26). Black and white footage dreams of blue hulled boats as serene as the sky. Seagulls sing above the crowds (2:37). Fisherman cast lines over the dock (2:47); nets lay cast out under the sun for drying. Hot wood burning ovens roast crabs (3:03). Chinatown of the west (3:12) stands between Grant Ave and Stockton street. A Californian wanders through the alley (3:19). The newspaper bulletin board hangs behind; news of yester-year tacked all over (3:23). The narrator mentions the areas seedy history (3:31); opium smoking flooded North America during the Gold Rush. Opium dens sprung up in 1850. Young locals smile up to the camera (3:44). A car pedals up notoriously steep roads (3:56). Town homes crust the streets of steep grades (4:02). A view runs from the pavement of Market Street (4:09). City buses roll forward (4:17). Flowers bloom in a flower sellers stall (4:21) in the center of business, shopping and theater district. Aerial shots capture City Hall (4:33), the Public Library, the State Building (4:48), Exposition Auditorium (4:50) and the Civic Opera House (4:54). Mission Dolores, erected in 1776 is captured (5:01). The neighborhood of Twin Peaks (5:07). English author Robert Louis Stevenson (5:19) called this area ‘the most interesting in the union’. The Fleishhacker pool; the largest in the world is pictured (5:29). The Pacific pool stretches over 1,000 feet carrying over 6 million gallons of water. A glory of Golden Gate Park is the Japanese Tea Garden (5:13). Gardens sprout between pagodas. A tiny rustic bridge (5:58) runs over water. The expansive Golden Gate Park (6:09). The old Gjoa (6:23) is pictured; this was the first boat to navigate the icy path from the Atlantic to the Pacific (6:30). A massive windmill spins (6:36) near the entrance of Golden Gate Park. Sea foam runs along the coast (6:57). Waves run up against the rocks of Point Lobos (7:10). Seals sunbathe on jagged rocks (7:29). The entryway to space of the Legion of Honor (7:42) stands in Lincoln Park. Aerial shots follow (7:58). Other notable sites include the Palace of Fine Arts (8:10) hosting the remains of the Panama Pacific Exhibition of 1915. Aerial shots swing around the stunning structure (8:23). Hatch Harbor hangs on the outskirts of the city (8:35). Pleasure crafts await trips into the Pacific. The grim citadel of the Spanish fortress (8:45); Alcatraz is pictured. Boats swim before it. A lighthouse stands in the background (8:53). This is the highest on the western coast. A view from across the bay catches the Berkley clock tower at the University of California (9:02). Aerial shots follow of University Hall (9:13), Agricultural Hall (9:15) Hearst Memorial Mining Building (9:18) and the Greek theater (9:21). Fort Point hangs on one side of the Golden Gate at the top of the Presidio (9:26). The film concludes with a final trip over the Golden Gate (9:43) and the sunset of the western sky (9:50).
