Prior to the creation of Part 107, Section 333 was the primary regulatory framework for unmanned aircraft. Literally thousands of exemption requests were being filed.
With the arrival of Part 107, Section 44807 was created for uses like vehicles which are heavy weight, delivering packages, or carrying hazardous chemicals.
Our data shows that with Part 107, section 44807 petition requests went from thousands per year to dozens.
Another surprise in our data is that petitions under 44807 are dominated by agriculture and heavy weight photography (67%).
More importantly, the most common vehicle weight that operators are seeking is for an aircraft that’s 75 lbs.
That weight also appears to be based on the fact that a certain family of commercially available unmanned platforms are commonly used.
This episode is in partnership with the Eno Center for Transportation. Eno is an independent, nonprofit think tank focused on transportation. As an organization, Eno shapes public debate on critical multimodal transportation issues and builds an innovative network of transportation professionals. Eno’s Aviation Working Group is a standing advisory group on all matters relating to aviation policy. Their latest report, Bridging the Gap: Sustaining UAS Progress While Pursuing a Permanent Regulatory Framework, will inform today’s discussion.
