Henri Nouwen a Dutch Catholic Priest and Professor once wrote, “A waiting person is a patient person. The word patience means the willingness to stay where we are and live the situation out to the full in the belief that something hidden there will manifest itself to us.”
We live in a society that prides itself on fast service, fast paced, no wait, fast results, fast food, no lines, and no time lost. Patience is no one’s strong suit especially in the culture we currently are living in. We want and desire everything to be now. Instant results, instant answers right at the tip of our fingers.
We tend to frown on anything or anyone we are called to wait on or wait for. We have built our lives and society on this concept of never having to endure the art and gratification of patience. I can admit that this is a struggle for me as well, I do not like to wait, and I wrestle with patience and especially when I am called to wait on God.
Trusting in God is not immediate, and it requires waiting. Trusting in God is knowing the destination even if you do not fully know or understand the route to be taken. Alan Alexander Milne was an English writer best known for his books about Winnie-the-Pooh, as well as for children's poetry, and I love what he wrote quote, “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.”
Margaret Thatcher was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold the position. She once spoke on her extraordinary patience when she said quote, “I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.” We don’t like to wait on God unless we truly feel we will get our way.
You see patience and waiting on God takes us from the reliance on our own abilities, talents and know-how and places it at the feet of Jesus. Trusting in God is knowing that with every promise He makes, He also makes the provision for that promise. But what happens when we begin to get weary in our waiting. When our patience for God begins to wear out and we take matters into our hands the results become ours not Gods. The results will be human, not divine, the results might get something done but it won’t be the miraculous.
