Hi there, and welcome back to #weirdsodaforlife! Some people spice up their lives with excitement and danger, but I? I ask Mr. Weird to go pick us up some Burger King so I can try Fiery Strawberry and Sprite from their new Fiery menu. We are not the same, lol.
We’ve talked about Sprite and admittedly, talking about Burger King’s history (started in 1953, has changed hands a few times, broiler burgers are the foundation) feels boring to me too. So let’s talk in brief about BK’s limited-time only Fiery menu. The Fiery Strawberry & Sprite we’re drinking today is supposed to be a “Level 1” spice level out of five. Apparently, the strawberry puree (sing it like Prince’s Raspberry Beret for greatest effect) has a mysterious spice mixed into it that is then mixed with the Sprite. The other four levels are food items, which include cheesesticks, chicken fries, chicken sandwiches and of course, the flagship Whopper. (There’s a link at the end of this if you’re interested.) Personally, I haven’t eaten at a Burger King in years, though I do have a soft spot for them. When I was younger, I used to get sick a lot (specifically from strep throat) and when I was on the mend, my mom would always get me a Whopper Jr. to celebrate. Not sure why we landed on that as our treat of choice, but I remember it fondly all the same.
Did Fiery Strawberry and Sprite bring the spice? Or was the only warm thing the temperature of the soda? When I opened the lid (hey, just because it’s a fountain drink, it doesn’t mean we skip the sniff test), it smelled pleasantly like, well...strawberries! I didn’t catch any whiffs of pepper though, which you KNOW we’ve had in other sodas that have purported to be spicy. I then made sure that the soda was well-mixed and tried sips from the top and bottom of the cup. The taste of the soda is best equated to a strawberry lemonade, which I enjoyed! I thought that perhaps the crispness of normal Sprite would cut through the puree, but instead, the fruit softened the sharpness of the lemon-lime soda without muddling both flavors. I was also pleasantly surprised at the spice level and its immediacy! Don’t get me wrong, this is not SPICY spicy. If I had to guess, I suspect they mixed a little cayenne into the strawberry to make it have a slight kick. However, once I drank it, I IMMEDIATELY felt the spice in the back of my throat. Also, let’s remember that this is a fast food chain: it’s often in a chain’s best interest to keep things as bland/indistinct as possible. The fact that this has noticeable spice at ALL should be celebrated. If you like sweet strawberry drinks, I’d get this one. I’m sort of tempted to try and recreate this at home!
Next week, we’re going international, you Weirdos! When Stephanie visited last week, she brought me TWO drinks from Iceland to try! We’re going to open Appelsin to try next week on our regular Friday schedule. We’re back! Until next time, Drink Weird!
