Hi there, and welcome back to #weirdsodaforlife! Today, this soda comes from the lands of the ice and snow via Friend of the Channel Stephanie and her partner, Mr. Stephanie, the Pilk Lover. That’s right, we’re drinking Appelsin from Egill Skallagrímsson Brewery. Will it induce Viking raids, or will I need multiple aides?
First, I can confidently claim that this is the first Icelandic soda we’ve had on the channel or that I’ve ever had ever! Secondly, what did those apples do that was such a horrible sin? I mean, they turned orange! Well, don’t worry, whatever those apples are doing, it doesn’t affect Appelsin. You see, Appelsin is LITERALLY the Norwegian and Danish term for...orange. The origin can be traced back to the Dutch word "appelsien", which itself comes from a contraction of "appel" (apple) and "Sina" (China), meaning "apple from China." (It DOES make me wonder if folks decided to chomp on through the orange peel like an apple. Bleh.) As for this particular Appelsin (because we’ve learned that Appelsin itself is more of an adjective than anything else), apparently the Egill Skallagrímsson Brewery (founded in 1913 and the oldest brewery in Iceland!) created it in 1955! Furthermore, at Christmas, Icelanders mix it with a malt beverage and call their blend, Jólaöl, or Christmas ale. Personally, this just sounds like a lot of steps to make a Smirnoff Ice Screwdriver, but what do I know?
And with that, let’s see if Scandinavian oranges taste better than American ones! Opening the soda, the strong orange smell was immediately apparent. However, the scent was reminiscent of fresh oranges, not artificial sweetness. Unfortunately, that’s about as fresh as it got. While I’m not going to criticize the amount of bubbles/fizziness because travel is legit a thing, the flavor of this was just...good. It wasn’t mindblowingly great or bad, it was just mid. The closest equivalent I could come up with is flat Sunkist or slightly fizzy Tang. Neither one is bad, but it’s not something I’m going out of my way to get on my own. I am glad I tried it though! The experience itself is super cool (how many of us are going to Iceland, after all) and I’m so glad Stephanie and her husband Lord Pilk were thoughtful enough to get it for me.
Next week, I’m torn between two options and admittedly haven’t decided yet. But to give you a hint, we may either extend our time overseas...or we may come back stateside for a Coca-Cola crowd pleaser. You’ll have to watch to find out! Until next time, Drink Weird!
