The AFL under-18 national championships began with an exciting game at Thebarton Oval. Standout players included a talented Tasmanian midfielder, a promising Hawthorn father-son prospect, and a skilled member of the Gold Coast Academy.
In the match, the Allies triumphed over South Australia by 16 points, showcasing individual brilliance from various players. Ryley Sanders, a smooth-moving midfielder for the Allies, delivered an outstanding performance. He amassed a game-high 36 disposals, including 20 contested possessions, along with seven marks, seven tackles, and two goals.
Originally from Tasmania, Sanders relocated to Melbourne last year to attend Melbourne Grammar. As a member of the AFL Academy squad, he draws inspiration from top players like Melbourne's Clayton Oliver and Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury. This year, Sanders plays for the Sandringham Dragons in the Coates Talent League.
South Australia's key defender, William McCabe, stood out as the top-ranked player for the home side. He contributed nine disposals, seven intercept possessions, seven spoils, and five tackles. McCabe, who plays for Central Districts in the SANFL, is a father-son prospect for Hawthorn this year, following in the footsteps of his father Luke, who played 138 games for the club from 1995 to 2004.
Another impressive performer was South Australian teammate Jack Delean, who scored four goals from just seven disposals, making him the leading goalkicker of the match.
Jed Walter, an Allies player and member of the Gold Coast Academy, continued his impressive season. Walter displayed his skills as a power key forward, standing tall at 194cm. In the game, he recorded three goals, 17 disposals, and nine marks. Throughout the Coates Talent League this season, Walter has been averaging 17.3 disposals, 5.5 marks, and 4.5 goals in four matches.
The AFL under-18 national championships showcased the talents of these exceptional players, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
