I spent about ten days visiting my sister near Duncan, BC. It was a chance to get some rest and rejuvenate after over a month on the road. There was time for a few day trips. My rear tire was close to a racing slick but I had a relatively dry ride down to Nanaimo to have lunch with an riding friend from 2018. Pyxy was visiting Newfoundland on her own epic continent adventure and we shared a campsite at Dildo Run Provincial Park, had breakfast in Twillingate which included molasses butter. Some good. Earlier this year she had a bike accident and was still recovering. The bike didn’t. Luckily, at the time of this editing, she is back on a new, lovely looking bike and starting new adventures.
I had already planned to get the rear tire replaced in Duncan and ended up at Ignition Motorsports who had a Dunlop Elite 4 in stock when I called them from Alberta and booked the bike in. I get an oil change done at the same time. I am next planning of getting both front and rear changed in Ashville, NC in a month and a half. We know how planning goes sometimes.
This is the first time that I have been to the west coast since 2008 and I do take advantage of that to see a wonderful former student and take her for a ride up to Squamish for lunch and a life story catch-up. Jess and her partner were hoping to camp with me for a couple of days but that did not work out but she was able to take an afternoon off and we had a very nice ride (in spite of roadwork) and a great late lunch at the Cloudburst Café.
It does make me realize how much we do need to take time to just even touch base with parts of our past. Sometimes that gives us clarity on our present and in my case makes me think about my mortality. How many more times will I get to touch base with people a continent away from where I am living?
