This is part two of the day after leaving Andy’s. It’s going to be long by itself. The tail end of Hwy. 199 has a lot of great curves and gets into a bit of the redwood forest before coming out at the Pacific Ocean and Crescent City. In 2008, I rode this section going the other way. I had come down from Redding on Hwy. 299 (another great road) with lots of smoke. This is still Robert Pirsig’s route from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. My back is really hurting and getting on and off the bike is especially difficult. Heck, walking is too. There are beautiful sections along the shore as well as the surreal ride through the redwoods. Once I get to Arcata, this is all new road to me.
I’m not sure how well my back is going to take to moving the trailer around and setting up. California State parks, at least the prime ones are also a little pricy so I opted for a 2 star motel and a hot bath.
