Bedwetting or peeing in bed or enuresis may happen during the daytime (daytime enuresis) or at night, called nocturnal enuresis. A child must be wetting the bed after age 5 years for it to qualify as bedwetting. Girls stop bedwetting faster than boys and bedwetting can run in families or have an inherited component.
There are some diseases that may mimic bedwetting like epilepsy, diabetes, urinary tract infection and sickle cell disease.
Bedwetting may be caused by learning disorders, emotional problems, or just poor effort at training the child to stay dry.
Bedwetting does not always require treatment because it gets better as the child ages, or resolves with age. In some instances, it needs to be treated, especially when it causes conflicts in the family and leads to low self-esteem of the child. Treatment involves the child not drinking close to bedtime, resolving to stay dry at every bedtime, keeping a log of whether the child stayed dry or not, and rewarding the child for staying dry. Do not punish a child for bedwetting. If these do not work, urine alarm systems or bells can help. Also, medications can help after the child is seen in hospital.
