Today we're discussing some important things you need to consider prior to buying your first boat and some major questions to ask yourself before you commit to a pleasure craft. We’re at that time of year approaching the spring. Right now there’s a ton of people itching to buy a boat. The real question is… have you thought this through? How could this possibly be a bad idea?
Make sure purchase decision isn't based solely on aesthetic justifications and the boat aligns with your budget, is appropriate for the activities you plan on doing, and is a good fit for the environmental conditions you plan on bringing it into. You might like the idea of a certain boat, but that doesn’t mean that boat is necessarily the best fit for you.
What are you getting yourself into with a used boat? You might get more baggage than what you planned for financially if you don't go over the boat with a fine tooth comb. What should you look out for in a something like an outboard and what are some red flags that should tip you off to look the other way?
Here’s a checklist for those of you buying a used boat. If you’re paying attention, this will help save you money in the long haul:
If possible, you should take the boat out for test drive on the lake to see how it idles, that it shifts smoothly, all the gauges work, and if it can hit wide open throttle no problem. If you don’t have that option of taking it out for a spin, you can always get it running with a pair of muffs and a garden hose. Check the video out here on how to do that:

I would highly suggest is for you to preform a compression test on the motor to make sure it’s going to preform well. You can get one of these gauges online or go to a shop and have it done there. I’ll drop a link below for if you’d like to do more reading on how to do that:

-Make sure you inspect the lower end/prop.
-Check your trim tilt and make sure that it moves up and down with ease and make sure there's no hydraulic fluid leaking.
-Test the battery.
-Check underneath of the boat for noticeable cracks.
-Check the trailer, verify the lights work, check the rollers and bunks, make sure the tires aren’t bald and don’t have leaks, and ask when was the last time the bearings have been greased. A spare trailer tire would be great if included. Check out the video below for more info on boat trailers:

-Take a walk on the interior floor of the boat and make sure there aren’t any soft spots (if it’s not mint condition and there’s minor stuff like tears in the seat, this could knock some off the price tag).
-Ask the seller about all their recent maintenance and their procedure to winterize, as well as
where it's been stored during the winter/off season.
Any add ons the seller can include for you are great! Here is a list of freebies you should look out for:
-extra PFDs
-boat ladder
-protective cover
-anchor
-oils
-boat cleaner
-gas tanks
Before you buy a boat, consider all additional costs attached to having a boat:
-winter storage fees.
-oil and fuel
-parts.
-repairs
-boat insurance
-courses.
If you want save your money and still have a rippin’ good time, I’d suggest going for an older model 2 stroke. This will give you the luxury of boating without the luxury price tag and you can do a lot of the maintenance on that yourself!
If you want to contemplate outboards, I’ll drop a link below for our recent video 2stroke vs 4stroke and you can figure out which one of those options would work best for you:

Remember that when you buy a boat, there's a lot of things that could go wrong. Are you prepared for emergency situations and the general stress that having a boat may introduce in your life?
