After striking Pearl Harbor as part of Japan’s Kido Butai and racing through the early victories of World War II in the Pacific, the aircraft carrier IJN Hiryū reached her final battle at Midway and became one of the most important “last stands” in naval history. In this video, we follow Hiryū from her role in the Pearl Harbor attack to the turning-point chaos of June 4–5, 1942: how three Japanese carriers were crippled in minutes, how Hiryū counterattacked and helped hammer USS Yorktown, and how U.S. dive bombers then set Hiryū ablaze, forcing the crew to abandon ship before she was scuttled the next day.
Then we shift into deep-sea investigation mode. While modern expeditions have filmed and documented famous Midway wrecks like IJN Akagi and IJN Kaga, Hiryū’s resting place remains the missing piece of the carrier graveyard — believed to lie farther away from the main wreck cluster, making confirmation much harder in the vast, ultra-deep Pacific. What would it take to finally find the Hiryū wreck, verify her identity, and treat the site as the protected WWII war grave it is?
