London Road Cemetery was created in the mid-19th century, opening in 1855 as Wellingborough’s new municipal burial ground. At that time, churchyards across the country were becoming overcrowded, and the town needed a larger, purpose-designed space for burials.
The cemetery was laid out in the classic Victorian style, with formal paths, sections divided by tree-lined avenues, and an emphasis on peaceful, park-like surroundings. A pair of cemetery chapels once stood on the grounds (one Anglican, one Nonconformist), reflecting the religious diversity of the town, though only parts and traces of them remain today.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, London Road Cemetery became the resting place for generations of Wellingborough residents, including Commonwealth War Graves from both World Wars. The Victorian and Edwardian gravestones, many carved with symbolic designs, show the changing social history of the town.
Today, the cemetery remains one of Wellingborough’s most historically significant burial sites—quiet, atmospheric, and filled with over a century and a half of local heritage.
