Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell has medieval origins, with the earliest parts dating to the 13th century, and the churchyard developed around it as the town’s primary burial ground. For centuries it served the local community, expanding gradually as Rothwell grew from a medieval market town into a busier industrial centre in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The cemetery contains a mix of medieval graves (mostly unmarked), Georgian stones, and many Victorian monuments, reflecting different eras of Rothwell’s history. Several notable local families, tradespeople, and servicemen from both World Wars are buried there.
Holy Trinity is also known locally for its connection to Rothwell’s famous Bone Crypt (the Ossuary) at the nearby St Peter’s Church. Although Holy Trinity’s cemetery is separate, both sites highlight the long, layered history of burial practices in the town.
Today, the churchyard remains a quiet, historic space, with mature trees and centuries-old gravestones that trace Rothwell’s community life over nearly 800 years.
