Описание: What a brilliant scrap that was for the DHL Fastest Lap in the French GP! At Le Castellet, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton were still battling it out for the bonus point and the fastest race lap on the very last lap with the honours going to Ferrari.

Initially, the world champion had posted a 1:32.764 minutes, beating the previous best time set by teammate Valtteri Bottas on Lap 43 by more than eight-tenths despite running on used hard tires.

However, Hamilton was forced to take drastic measures, as shortly before, Sebastian Vettel had made a second pit stop. Two laps before the end of the race, the Ferrari driver bolted on another fresh set of the softest soft tire. “I tried anyway, even though the team said I shouldn’t bother,” said Hamilton. “I too could definitely have posted the fastest lap in the end.”

In point of fact, though, Vettel did manage to successfully counterattack – but only just. By a mere 0.024-second margin, the German beat Hamilton’s fastest time with a 1:32.740 minutes at the very last moment, enabling him to set a new lap record for Circuit Paul Ricard, and for the first time this season, secure the bonus point introduced in 2019 for the fastest race lap.

All in all, Formula 1 at Le Castellet patently showed just how much faster the cars have become in 2019. For the first time on Lap 30, Lewis Hamilton beat his own lap record of 1:34.225 minutes set last year. Vettel’s best time was another 1.5 seconds faster in the end.

With two DHL Fastest Laps each, Pierre Gasly, Valtteri Bottas and Charles Leclerc continue to lead the overall standings of the 2019 DHL Fastest Lap Award from Hamilton and Vettel (one each) after the eighth race of the season.
