Every successful Facebook Retargeting Campaign has 3 main components:
A custom audience
A custom conversion
A conversion campaign
Setting up a custom audience requires that the Facebook Pixel is installed on your website. To do this, head over to the “Events Manager” inside Facebook Business Manager.
If you haven’t set up a Facebook Pixel yet, please utilize the step-by-step instructions provided via Facebook.
After the pixel is installed, head over to Audiences from the Facebook Business Manager menu.
On the audiences page, you’ll be able to select “Create Audience” - make sure you select “Custom Audience”
From the popup, you’ll select Website.
In the audience builder, use the URL path parameters that identify a specific audience from your website traffic that you would like to retarget.
In our example, we use MQL which means “Marketing Qualified Lead”.
To ensure we’re only showing our ads to MQL’s, we EXCLUDE SQL’s and Booked appointments using the Exclude feature in the audience builder.
If you make a mistake, don’t worry, you can also add to and/or update your audiences in the future.
After we have created our Custom Audience, we can now create our Custom Conversion.
To do this, go to the Events Manager again and select the “Custom Conversions” icon from the left menu.
Here, you’ll do very similar to the Audiences builder however, you will not be able to edit this conversion after you’ve created it. Be sure to use URL paths that won’t change in the future.
Lastly, you’ll move on to creating a Conversion Campaign from the Ads Manager.
Once you’re in the ad set, be sure to select the Custom Audience you set up to show your retargeting ads to.
You’ll also need to select your pixel and the custom conversion event you created in step 2.
Once you’ve set up your ad and launched your campaign, you can now sit back and watch all the leads/sales roll in as you begin retargeting your website traffic.
