📍Let's walk and tour Playa Tambor, a nice beach in Puntarenas. It's on the way to Santa Teresa from the ferry in Puntarenas. This beach is very quiet and very nice for relaxing. There's a couple small restaurants on the beach.

Q: How do I get to Playa Tambor?
A: Take the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera (70 minutes), then drive about 2.5 hours. Road's paved most of the way, gets a bit rough for the last stretch. You can also fly into the small airstrip, but flights are limited.
Q: Is Playa Tambor good for swimming?
A: Yes, it's one of the calmest beaches in the area. The bay shape blocks big waves, making it more like a lake. Great for families and kids, not great for surfing.
Q: Where can I buy groceries in Tambor?
A: There's a small supermarket in the center of town with basic supplies. For bigger shopping, you'll need to go to Cóbano (about 30 minutes away).
Q: What activities can I do in Tambor?
A: Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular due to calm waters. Bird watching (especially for scarlet macaws), beach walking at low tide, and fishing trips from the village. Some horseback riding tours too.
Q: When's the best time to visit?
A: December through April is dry season. Even in rainy season (May-November), mornings are often clear because mountains block some rain. Gets very hot midday year-round.
Q: Are there restaurants in Tambor?
A: Yes, several sodas (local restaurants) in town and near the beach. Most serve typical Costa Rican food and seafood. Prices are lower than tourist towns like Santa Teresa.
Q: How's the beach sand?
A: It's gray sand, not the white stuff you see in tourist photos. Beach is about 7 km long, great for walking. Some spots have shade from trees, but bring an umbrella for longer stays.
Q: Can I see whales or dolphins?
A: The bay's name (Bahía Ballena) means Whale Bay. Best time for whale watching is August to October. Local boats offer tours when whales are around.
Q: Are there ATMs?
A: There's one ATM in town, but it's not always reliable. Better to bring cash from bigger towns like Cóbano or before leaving Puntarenas.
Q: Is it safe to walk on the beach at night?
A: The town's generally safe, but stick to well-lit areas after dark. Beach walking better during day - no lighting on most of the beach at night.
Q: What about bugs and mosquitoes?
A: They're around, especially during rainy season. Sand flies can be active on the beach during sunrise/sunset. Bring repellent.
Q: Can I do a day trip to Santa Teresa from here?
A: Yes, but it's about an hour drive each way on some rough roads. Better as a full day trip than just a quick visit.
