Now don't get me wrong, I love my job in construction and think the construction management career is really great. But it's not for everyone and I want to bring to light what those drawbacks are and have an honest conversation with you all and set realistic expectations. After all, this is your life and your career we are talking about here.

1. Work Life Balance
There is not a great change you will have a work-life balance that is typical in construction. Working 9-5 is just a dream. As a construction project engineer, you will start your day around the work force's 8 hour day and tack on a few more hours outside of that to get the paperwork side of the business done. The key to this, is having this expectation and having open, honest conversations with yourself and those who are affected by your career and make sure this is the life you want to live. I see too many people brushing off this conversation or waiting until its too late to make a change. Don't be that person! You now know this will be an issue in construction up front: talk about it.

2. Mobility
The construction industry is cyclical. So the way companies combat that and avoid hiring and rehiring people, is through mobility. This can create an unstable lifestyle if you keep moving around from state to state or country to country just following the hot markets. A lot of companies out there will actually put a emphasis on mobility and may require you to move in order to be promoted and show your dedication to the company. If you still want to be in the industry but do not want to move, you need to be an excellent construction project engineer, project manager, superintendent, etc. so that you build a great reputation in your area so if you need to leave your current company you have a bunch of candidates that would be happy to take you.

3. High Stress
Construction is not easy, it's a high stress job with tight budgets and tight schedules. You have to have another honest conversation with yourself about whether or not you thrive in this situation. In the field and in the office, there will be challenges that you will need to take on and overcome, and if that is not how you are, construction is not really the place for you. I highly suggest you find yourself a mentor in the industry that can help guide you in the right direction in tough times.

4. People Business
Now I am not saying that I hate people, but it can be a con for those who think construction is just about building. The relationships you make are almost if not more important than the actual project you are constructing. If you cannot work with others, construction is not the place for you. It's usually best to take ownership and try to mold your communication skills and tailor it to each audience, it'll get your far in your career.

5. It's a male dominated industry
Like it or not, women bring a different perspective than men and different ways of thinking that can really help, however construction is male dominated. The industry is moving in a direction that is more diverse, however we are not there yet and it's one of those industries that have just been this way for a long time.
