1. Never Think You Are Above Any Task
When you graduate with a civil engineering degree or construction management degree, some people think that it entitles you to not have to do minor tasks. You need to get that out of your head. Most people when they enter the construction industry have no experience and quite frankly, don't know anything even with their fancy degrees. It's very important to humble yourself and try to learn from every task that is given to you and move forward and grow in the industry.

2. Learn from the construction workers
Again, the stigma may be that the college grad is "smarter" than the trade worker that didn't go to school. However, in construction, as engineers, the workers are smarter than you. They do this for a living and have actually marketable skills that can help them be useful in the world. A huge amount of my knowledge that I have as a construction project engineer came from these workers so take the time to learn from them and build relationships that will help your career grow.

3. Seize Opportunities
The construction industry has a decent gap between the young and old workforce which means that as an entry level engineer you may be thrown into a situation that you won't be ready for. Seize the opportunity. Don't be afraid to fail and set yourself up for accelerated growth in your construction management career.

4. Learn How To Build
This is probably the most important tip and mindset that you need to be successful as a construction engineer. When you start out as a field or project engineer, think about tasks as if you need to do them yourself. Figure out what materials you need, how many people you need, safety, etc. Having this mindset will help you tremendously down the line even when you're a project manager that doesn't spend much time in the field.

5. Work Hard and Ask Questions
Construction is an experience based industry. Time is the only way to accelerate your growth and that means spending more of each day learning and growing. Part of that process is not being afraid to ask questions and always be thinking of better ways to improve your construction career.
