The most Spiritual city in Iraq!
Were the world's largest annual religious gathering is held!

Every year, millions of people walk, yes you heard it correctly! A foot pilgrimage to Karbala During this pilgrimage event, called Arbaeen (which is Arabic for ‘forty’)!

The religious gathering commemorates the death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson, imam hussein. As an act of religious solidarity, Muslim pilgrims make the journey to the holy city of Karbala on foot. Pilgrims are provided with essentials such as accommodation, food, clothing by the community as they make their journey to the holy city, to ward off negativity and wash away sins.

the ancient city comes alive in a riot of colour and sound, like a huge festival!

They walk to see and pay respect to the shrine where Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, Imam Hussein, is buried.

Since we are here during a normal day, i would like to show you a glimpse of karbala!

We started our day by grabbing breakfast in the down town!

Then headed to the shrines compound

Once u step in and start walking toward the main square, You will see thousands of people walking around, women, men, old, young! You start getting a spiritual feeling that is hard to describe in words!
And hearing prayers in the background along with religious chanting takes you to another level!

Entered the shrine of imam hussein, a mesmerizing place with beautiful architecture!
seeing all these people some busy with prayers some reading Quran and some paying respect and worshiping! This scenery is so delightful - what an experience!

I felt so sad that there had been so much negativity surrounding this community!
Imagine even for me as a local, i never thought that i would visit this place because of my ignorance and how negative media affected my thoughts!

Today i learned something new, i shattered a stereotype, my views are wider!

Walking arbaeen is on my bucket list, and hopefully i will tick it off this year!
