Learn Past Continuous Tense | Basic English Grammar

Описание: Past Continuous Tense is used to talk about an action that was happening at a particular time in the past.



Hindi Identification
We use the past continuous tense when a Hindi sentence ends with रहा था / रही थी / रहे थे.



Examples:
मैं पढ़ रहा था → I was studying.
वह खेल रही थी → She was playing.
वे आ रहे थे → They were coming.



Structure

Affirmative Sentence

Subject + was / were + Verb (ing) + Object

I was reading a book.
She was cooking food.
They were playing cricket.



How to Use Helping Verbs Was / Were
Use 'was' with → I, He, She, It, or any singular noun Use 'were' with → You, We, They, or plural nouns



Negative Sentences

Subject + was/were + not + Verb (ing) + Object

I was not reading a book.
She was not cooking food.
They were not playing cricket.



Interrogative Sentences

Was/Were + Subject + Verb (ing) + Object?

Were you reading a book?
Was she cooking food?
Was I disturbing you?




Wh-Questions

Wh-word + was/were + subject + verb (ing) + Object?

What were you reading?
Where was he going?
Why were they laughing?




Use of Past Continuous

1. Action was happening at a particular time in the past

She was talking to her teacher.
I was writing notes.
We were learning grammar.



2. Something was happening in the past when another action took place

I was sleeping when you called me.
She was studying when the lights went out.
We were playing when it started to rain.

Remember: The first action shows a longer action (past continuous), and the second action shows a shorter action (past simple)

वह टीवी देख रही थी।
हम स्कूल जा रहे थे।

वह पानी पी रहा था।
मैं अंग्रेज़ी सीख रहा था।
वे हँस रहे थे।
वह अपना काम कर रही थी।
हम तुम्हारा इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।
वह किताब लिख रहा था।
मैं अपना होमवर्क कर रहा था।
वे बाजार जा रहे थे।
वह चाय बना रही थी।
हम फिल्म देख रहे थे।
