Other common names for the white oak group include American white oak, northern white oak, southern white oak, stave oak, or fork-leaf white oak. The scientific name for the white oak species is Quercus alba. The white oak tree can be identified by its leaf shape. White oak leaves have a rounded crown while red oak leaves are pointed.
The white oak tree is sustainable and is wide-spreading across North America, primarily in eastern North America. White oak acorns will begin to drop once the tree is 20 years old. Its bark is a light gray with a short, stocky trunk. The acorns provide a source for fertilization, as well as a major food source for wildlife. The white oak is the state tree of Maryland, Illinois, and Connecticut. White oak has a slow growth rate but can live for centuries. They can grow in acidic soil and prefer full sun. They are native trees to many states, including Minnesota and Florida.
White oak’s color is more uniform than red oak. White oak sapwood is whitish to light brown, whereas the heartwood is a medium brown with olive or gray hues.
White oak wood is used for flooring, interior doors, and trim. White oak provides a rustic look. It has smaller, tighter defects that give it a worn-in, classic appearance. White oak wood is wildly available across the eastern United States. Woodworkers use white oak lumber for cabinetry, paneling, veneers, boat building, and barrels. White oak’s hardiness makes it a prime choice for many utilizations.
