At Baird Brothers, we know there are a lot of wood species you can choose from for your project. But how do you know which one to pick? In this video, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks chats with Terry Baird on the characteristics of cherry wood.
Watch as Terry Baird explains the projects that cherry lumber is typically used for, either chosen by look or durability. American cherry has many applications but is on the softer side. Because of its softness, a cherry floor may collect dents and scuffs easily. Cherry wood is great for mouldings, paneling, and even kitchen cabinets. While homeowners like to use it as cabinetry, its workability allows woodworkers to use it for cutting boards, fine furniture, and musical instruments.
Learn common uses for the wood, sanding properties, and the color differences between sapwood and heartwood. Common names for American cherry include black cherry, rum cherry, and wild cherry. Black cherry wood can be sanded to maintain a smooth texture.
Freshly cut black cherry wood may have dark spots or flecks, which are actually gum pockets. American hardwood is used from both sapwood and heartwood. Cherry sapwood has a lighter color while its heartwood is the common reddish-brown color you imagine when you think of cherry. With the right wood stain, you can blend these colors nicely. This would create a uniform look while keeping the same grain pattern.
Black cherry trees (Prunus serotina) can be found in the northeastern part of North America, including Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New England, and New York. In this video, learn facts about cherry trees, including where they grow, when the fruit tree reaches maturity, and its rank on the Janka hardness scale.
Does it glue well? Does it have a high or low shock resistance? What pattern is the typical wood grain? For more information on cherry wood, view our in-depth identification guide - https://www.bairdbrothers.com/species...
