The research group of Professor Nina Kann with Dr. Andreas Ekebergh at Chambers Institute of Technology in Sweden have reported the reduction of alkynes to E-alkenes with a ruthenium catalyzed transfer hydrogenation. The catalyst for the reaction is triruthenium dodecacarbonyl. The reaction works best on diaryl alkynes and therefore complements the dissolving metal reduction of dialkyl alkynes with sodium in ammonia. The work was published in the Journal of Organic Chemistry.
