This video is a reaction to NileRed's video on the synthesis of dilantin (phenytoin) using urea isolated from urine. The synthesis includes the reaction of benzil with urea in base. The reaction is analogous to the benzilic acid rearrangement. The reaction starts with an ethanol solution of benzil and urea with an aqueous solution of KOH. After prolonged heating under reflux, the reaction was diluted in water and cooled. Any resulting precipitate was filtered. The filtrate was then acidified with HCl to precipitate the crude phenytoin. Filtration followed by recrystallization from ethanol afforded purified phenytoin in a 49% yield based on benzil. A plausible mechanism of the reaction is included in the video commentary.
