The orchestra of Pugliese is a special one. It’s an orchestra that appeals to tango dancers, musicians and listeners, in Argentina but also abroad, like in Europe for instance. His music is popular with beginner dancers – who get swept away by the emotion and drama, especially of his 1950s recordings – as well as experienced dancers who will find lots of musical challenges and nuances to interpret in their dance.

That being said, Pugliese’s music in general is not that easy to dance to. In the milongas, it’s mostly the instrumental tracks that are played, like La Yumba, or Emancipación from the 1950s, or like El Monito and El Arranque from the 1940s – for instance.

As a DJ, I also turn to the instrumentals most of the times. But there are great tracks by Pugliese with singers too. In the 1940s he recorded with Roberto Chanel, Jorge Vidal and Alberto Morán - and from the 1950s with Jorge Maciel, Miguel Montero and others. With Maciel his songs become a bit heavy, a bit ‘much’. Too much perhaps sometimes.However, I do have a soft spot for Alberto Morán, who is featured in this tanda. Maybe not the easiest tanda to dance to, but these tangos go straight to the heart. We start with the stunningly beautiful Una Vez (1946), next is Mentira (1945), then Déjame en Paz (1948) and finally, we’re left speechless with Sin Palabras (1947).
