Osvaldo Pugliese was born in Villa Crespo, Buenos Aires in 1905. He was a pianist, composer and orchestra leader in the so-called ‘evolutionary school’ of tango, influenced by Julio de Caro. Pugliese’s music is loved by fans of concert tango, stage performers and social dancers alike; especially for his tangos from the 1950s, full of dynamics and grand gestures.

In the 1920s Pugliese already played with Roberto Firpo and with Pedro Maffia, in the early ’30s with Elvino Vardaro, Alfredo Gobbi, Aníbal Troilo and Ciriaco Ortiz. Osvaldo Pugliese started his own orchestra in 1939. Most members of this orchestra would stay with him for many years, even decades.

He made his first record on the Odeon label in 1943, and in spite of being censored, banned from the radio, actively opposed and put in prison by various regimes, he would go on recording and performing till the 1990s.

We did a tanda of the week before with some of his instrumentals from the 1950s – which are the type of Pugliese classics you will hear most in the milongas. And we did a tanda with singer Alberto Morán, including the beautiful ‘Una vez’. Now we go back to his first recordings, with singer Roberto Chanel.

Alfredo Mazzochi, better known by his stage name as Roberto Chanel, was born in Caballito, Buenos Aires in 1914, as the son of Italian immigrants – his father played the accordion, which he had brought with him from his home town, Napoli.
Roberto sang and played guitar with his brothers, and they performed together as a trio.

In 1940, Chanel joined the orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese. They recorded 31 tracks, 3 of which duets together with Alberto Morán. Chanel may not be the most famous singer of Pugliese (not a pop star like Morán) but he was surely one of the best, with a very refined style that matched the still somewhat restrained 1940s Pugliese. He stayed with Pugliese until 1948. The next year, Chanel joined the orchestra of Florindo Sassone.

The first track of our tanda is ‘Farol’, also the first track that Pugliese and Chanel recorded together, in July 1943. The music was written by Virgilio Expósito, and the Lyrics by Homero Expósito. It’s a song that depicts the life in the poor ‘arrabals’ of the past, back in the days of the gas lamps.

The second track is ‘La abandoné y no sabía’ from 1944, music & lyrics by José Canet. A tango not necessarily associated with Pugliese, since it was also recorded by Ricardo Tanturi with Enrique Campos and by Miguel Caló with Raúl Berón. And it’s actually interesting to compare these recordings, first the perfectly adequate but straightforward version of Tanturi, then the still somewhat conventional Caló (both of them recorded it on the very same day), and then Pugliese. The intro alone shows Pugliese takes this tango to a whole new level.

Third is ‘Fuimos’, from 1946. I’ve been moving this track back and forth in the tanda. It’s such a strong song you might want to open with it, or save it as the final track, but somehow I felt the flow was best including it as the third track. And that’s part of DJ’ing I guess, it’s not an exact science – you have to go with your feeling, and tomorrow you may feel different. Anyway, ‘Fuimos’ is a romantic tango with lyrics by Homero Manzi and music by José Dames. It’s one of the relatively few romantic tangos Pugliese recorded, and perhaps the most romantic tango he recorded with Chanel.

For the final track we go back to 1945. It’s ‘Rondando tu esquina’, with lyrics by Enrique Cadícamo and music written by singer and composer Charlo. Charlo was almost as famous as Gardel, back in the late 1920s / early 30s, working with Lomuto and Canaro, so you might expect a very traditional tango. Instead it sounds quite modern – this sometimes dark, always emotional performance, reflecting the heart break in the lyrics.
