Born in Fujioka, Gunma Prefecture, Sakurai didn’t start out as a frontman — he first joined BUCK-TICK as a drummer. But his deep, mesmerizing voice and magnetic presence soon made him the perfect vocalist. When he took the microphone in 1985, the band transformed — from a small local act into a cultural phenomenon.

Sakurai was known for his dark romanticism, blending gothic aesthetics, sensuality, and philosophy. On stage, he seemed to exist between dream and nightmare — between angel and demon.
His lyrics explored pain, love, death, religion, and desire, but never directly. Always through poetry, mystery, and symbolism. In his hands, the Japanese language became pure art — rhythmic, hypnotic, and full of emotion.

On stage, he embodied elegance and decadence: every movement deliberate, every gesture meaningful, every glance powerful.
Off stage, he was shy, introverted, and deeply humble. Friends and fans alike described him as having “the soul of a poet.” He avoided the spotlight outside of music, keeping his private life secret — which only deepened his enigmatic aura.

Sakurai passed away suddenly on October 19, 2023, during a BUCK-TICK concert in Yokohama. His death shocked Japan and fans around the world.
He left this world the same way he lived — on stage, surrounded by music and light.
After his passing, hundreds of fans gathered with flowers, letters, and candles. Many compared him to David Bowie — both were masters of transformation, elegance, and emotional depth.

For more than 35 years, he performed with BUCK-TICK without ever stopping. His voice lives on through dozens of albums — from post-punk and electronic to darkly romantic ballads.
His solo work, such as SCHWEIN and THE MORTAL, revealed his fearless creativity and willingness to cross artistic boundaries.
