These two lifts are situated in a residential building in Berne. The tower blocks are among the oldest ones in Berne. They were originally equipped with Schlieren lifts which have been modernized with Mic B, Dyn S and S-series fixtures by Schindler in the 90s.
In 2011, the lifts in this block have been replaced. The lifts in the other blocks are being replaced in 2020/2021 successively.
The original configuration of the lifts was that ground and basement were the only two common floors. For the rest of the building, the lifts were split in a way that one mainly serves the lower part, while the other one mainly serves the upper part. Although there is not really a strict separation.
As a part of the replacement and due to new fire regulations, the right lift was implemented as a fireman's lift. Therefore, it now serves every floor. The missing floor 8/9 on the diagram is a mistake. Also, as a fireman's lift is has an intercom to communicate between ground floor, motor room and car. A ladder is installed in a cupboard inside the car and the roof contains a flap for the firemen to exit in case the lift gets stuck. The roof contains another ladder, so the next floor could be reached. All doors are labelled from within the shaft and the latch to open the doors is painted red in order to be visible. In firemen's mode the top flor cannot be accessed.
Both lifts run individually and are not in a group because they serve different floors.
The most interesting feature of these lifts are the Schindler PMS400 gearless machines. The PMS400 motor can also be found in some Eurolifts.
In order to increase efficiency, these lifts do not only have pre-doors, they also pre-start the VF-drive and they pre-release the brake while closing doors if a call is present.
Also, they're equipped with hand winding units which is unusual for gearless machines.
I have to admit that these are by far the smoothest running lift machines I've ever seen. Absolutely no vibrations from the motors can be noticed in the car.
