In this video, we take a deep look at Xi Jinping’s secret armada — the PLA Navy’s Type 075 amphibious assault ships and their successor, the Type 076 Sichuan — and how they fit into China’s plans for a potential military takeover of Taiwan.

Last December, the People’s Liberation Army sent a clear signal by deploying its Type 075 assault ships in major exercises near the Taiwan Strait. These massive vessels are often described as China’s version of the US Wasp-class amphibious assault ships, capable of carrying helicopters, troops, armored vehicles, and landing craft for rapid assault operations.

Displacing around 40,000 tons , the Type 075s function like light aircraft carriers , launching waves of helicopters to insert troops deep inland using so-called vertical envelopment tactics. In a conflict, they could bypass Taiwan’s heavily defended beaches and strike vulnerable areas, including the island’s mountainous east coast.

We also explore how these ships would operate alongside Type 071 landing ships , civilian ferries repurposed for war, and newly built amphibious barge flotillas designed to move troops and vehicles directly onto coastal roads and seawalls.

Finally, we examine China’s next leap forward: the Type 076 , a hybrid amphibious assault ship and drone carrier equipped with an electromagnetic catapult (EMALS) . With the first ship, Sichuan , set to enter service, this new class points to the future of China’s naval power projection — and Xi Jinping’s long-term ambitions in the Taiwan Strait.
