Speaking to American media outlet Politico, Bessent claimed the 25 per cent punitive tariff linked to India’s Russia oil imports had 'worked', forcing India to scale down purchases. The tariffs were imposed in two phases — 25 per cent over trade imbalances and another 25 per cent to penalise India for continuing energy ties with Russia after the Ukraine war. Bessent’s comments suggest Washington now sees a path to easing tariffs. While reports suggest private Indian firms may have reduced imports, New Delhi maintains that Russian oil purchases continue. A possible recalibration of the Trump administration’s hardline trade stance towards India can happen since both countries have been engaged at various levels in recent months to reach a mutually beneficial trade deal.
