2021 EP. 1- South FL Osceola Gobblers & The Struggle

Описание: This was the culmination of a 3 year process. The learning curve was a lengthy one and opportunities scarce.

Blake and I roosted this bird on Friday evening and rolled out of our tents at 2:30am Saturday to tiptoe through a jungle in the dark. We were each within 150 yards on either side of him when daylight broke. As another bird began to gobble his head off behind us, I chose to head to the more vocal of the two, having not heard our roosted gobbler yet. As I entered the second bird’s domain and began my own game, Blake struck the roosted bird within 100 yards of him and we each found ourselves with a golden opportunity in front of us. •
Blake played a classic game of cat and mouse amongst the cypress trees and several moves later, found himself looking down the barrel at his first Osceola longbeard 22 yards away. With a well placed shot between the smallest of gaps in trees, he had claimed his prize that he worked his butt off multiple times over a 3 year period. Meanwhile, I experienced the rush of the same song and dance that I’ve had with a wild turkey many times before. Closing within 60 yards twice, my unfamiliarity with this bird’s home proved to be his advantage as he got the best of me and vanished like the black ghost he seemed to be. This would be the last real opportunity I had as we continued to battle this place for our remaining 3 days.

After an overwhelming feeling of defeat and having a couple days to reflect, I find myself thankful that I was granted what I had prayed for in the dark swamp before the opening day sunlight lit the world up- an opportunity. We each had our opportunity and I’m grateful and ecstatic Blake was able to capitalize on his. Rest assured, I’ll be back for round 4 one day.
