60% of Karachi either has no access to line water or is classified as water-deficit.
This water crisis is not a consequence of a challenge in resources – but of a deliberate criminal enterprise which steals water from the bulk line and sells it back to the people, profiting from their suffering.
This was the key finding of Perween Rahman, Director of the Orangi Pilot Project, who took on the water mafia on behalf of the residents of Orangi – at too great a price.
