春と秋の年２回、郡上市内のあちこちで神社の白い幟が連なる景色を見ることができる。五穀豊穣を願う春と、恵みに感謝する秋に、集落の神社で祭礼が執り行われるからだ。
特に秋まつりは盛大だ。夜の地歌舞伎・演芸を挟んで、試楽・本楽の２日間に亘り神楽等が奉納される。しかし、大勢の役者を要するので、毎年開催されるところは数少ない。
寒水の掛踊（かのみずのかけおどり）は、郡上市明宝寒水地区の白山神社で行われる祭礼で、300余年の間、毎年、天下泰平と五穀豊穣に感謝し奉納されてきた。主役は竹刀を背負った若者たち。子どもからお年寄りまで総勢130名程が参加する。
郡上で一番早い春祭りは六日祭（花奪い祭り）、郡上で一番早い秋祭りは寒水の掛踊と言われる。繰り返し受け継がれた掛踊の背後に、寒水地区の人々のふるさとに対する熱い思いが見え隠れしている。
Kanomizu no Kakeodori, a traditional performance art has been passed down in Kanomizu region in Meiho since more than 300 years ago. It is a national intangible ethnocultural asset. It is a Shinto ritual of bountiful harvest which has been held at the Hakusan-jinja shrine of this area by about 150 men and boys.
From mid in August, the members start practicing every night. And the performance is held on the second weekend in September every year. The region people prepare for performance all together on 6th and 7th in September.
Kanomizu lies in a valley surrounded by mountains. It is said that villagers living in the other side of the mountain used to join them. Each village people took turn to sing and danced in a circle.
