📖 “The Lord hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.” – Jeremiah 28:15 (KJV)
In today’s morning devotion, we witness a dramatic confrontation in Jeremiah 28 between two voices—one popular, one faithful. Hananiah boldly declares that Babylon’s yoke will be broken within two years. The crowd would have loved it. It was hopeful, comforting, and politically convenient.
Jeremiah, however, had already spoken a different word from the Lord: the captivity would last seventy years. When Hananiah publicly breaks the wooden yoke Jeremiah was wearing, it appears as though optimism has triumphed over warning. But God responds with a sobering correction—what was wood would become iron. False hope only strengthens bondage.
This chapter reveals a timeless tension: human wishful thinking versus divine truth. Not every encouraging message is from God. Truth is not measured by applause, volume, or emotion—but by alignment with God’s revealed Word.
Jeremiah 28 calls us to spiritual discernment. In an age of many voices, the loudest is not always the truest. God’s message may confront before it comforts. It may correct before it consoles. But it will always lead to life.
This devotion challenges us: Are we seeking what feels good—or what is true?
Key Takeaways:
Popular messages are not always divine messages
False hope can deepen spiritual bondage
God’s truth may be uncomfortable but is ultimately life-giving
Discernment is essential in times of confusion
Faithfulness requires standing for truth even when it costs
