Did you know that the original Sonic the Hedgehog game has an easy mode? It's not to be found on the original Mega Drive/Genesis cartridge though - instead it's in the version of it released for Sega's follow-up console, the Sega Saturn.
Sega have never been shy of rereleasing their 16-Bit Sonic games, seemingly doing so every other month in some form or another. It started with a compilation on the Mega Drive/Genesis itself towards the end of its life, followed by Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn in 1997 in Japan, and 1998 elsewhere. It featured Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles.
The full original version of each game is available in the compilation, as well as alternate difficulty modes. This video is of the easy mode for the first Sonic game. It features just six stages from the game, one stage from each of the game's acts. Making it even easier are extra platforms, trampolines, fewer enemies, and those that are present don't put up much of a fight. Dr Robotnik appears at the end of the Labyrinth Zone, and again for the final battle. On completion, the game still shows the full ending.
Making it tougher though is the fact that to get the "true" ending, you need to collect four chaos emeralds, as opposed to six in the full game. However, you only get four opportunities to enter special stages which means you have ensure you always have the 50 necessary rings by the end of each stage to enter the special stage, and you have to make sure you get the emerald on each special stage. I didn't manage this.
