STORYLINE

The day after a small plane slammed into a Milan skyscraper, Italian authorities on Friday described the crash as "strange" and puzzled over what had led the Swiss pilot to veer off course and plow into the landmark tower.

Three people died - and 36 others were injured.

VOICE-OVER:

0003 Italian authorities say it was not a terrorist attack - but the image of this skyscraper is an eerie reminder of September 11th.

0014 As Milan residents tried to make sense of the tragedy...

0018 Rescue workers started the clear-up operation inside the 30-storey Pirelli building.

0023 The impact gutted the 25th and 26th floors - causing walls and ceiling to collapse and throwing glass and debris across offices.

0032 SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Roberto Formigoni, Lombardy region president:
"You can see the devastation that has been wrought. We are here on the 26th floor, the plane came straight in, carrying devastation and death. Unfortunately two of my co-workers have lost their lives on this floor and then there were also injured people on other floors. No one, they are telling me, is in a critical condition but the mourning of the families is as heavy as the impact on the structure of the Lombardy region."

0034 The head of the regional Lombardy government, which is based in the building, said the scene was one of devastation and mourned the deaths of the two lawyers who died when the plane slammed through the window.

0045 Authorities say they are puzzled by the crash.

0049 Pilot Luigi Fasulo - who died in the crash - had reported mechanical problems before veering off course, heading towards the centre of Milan.

0059 The 67-year old pilot then plowed into the landmark tower. Prosecutors are looking into various explanations, including technical problems and suicide.

0108 As the financial district counts the cost of the crash - authorities say that the tragedy could have been much greater.

0115 About 13-hundred people work in the building but most had gone home when the crash happened.
