Thursday 4th July saw SR Un-Rebuilt Battle Of Britain Class 4-6-2 no.34067 'Tangmere' out and about, hauling the Poole - Exeter - Poole 'Devonian'. The tour would run to Exeter via the Southern Mainline through Salisbury and over Honiton, returning via the Great Western Mainline through Bristol and Westbury. I spent the day out and about with friends and fellow YouTubers James (NwsNoaaChaser), Tom (BristolCastle) and Wilson (34002salisbury) and had plenty of laughs along the way. For the first shot I decided to try Sherborne on the Southern Mainline from Salisbury to Exeter, a new location for me and one that seemed quite pleasant. A few quick pre-trains shots before Tangmere is seen sweeping round through the station, giving a little toot on the whistle for her audience. Another new location was on the cards for the second shot of the day, Axminster Station. I also got to try out a low down shot for a change, partly because both James and I wanted to get panning shots without getting in each others shots, but also because I've always wanted to try one. Tangmere gives a very nice performance through Axminster, better than I was expecting with a nice long whistle, good speed and a lovely sound. The only downside was I got some electrical feedback after she passed, possibly from the radio mast next to us.
After a few drinks in the Great Western Hotel it was off for the first return shot, and for that I decided on Tiverton as Tangmere would be accelerating out of Tiverton Loop. After hearing her for a good while before, she eventually appeared round the corner sounding lovely as she passes us. You'll notice the late start to the panning, this is because when I went to pan my tripod head gave an awful lot of resistance (it was fine before and after) so I had to ease it in gently so as not to have any jerky panning. The final shot of the day saw me heading to Bradford-on-Avon Station, another new location of sorts. I have filmed here before, but not on the station itself although that was also for Tangmere. Because of an over hanging bush covering the view from platform 1 I had to stick to platform 2 where I wouldn't get as good an angle, although it did mean I was on the right side for the sun. Another cracking performance from Tangmere as she speeds through with a lovely whistle, and even the driver of the 19:31 held back until she had passed, good man!
Quite a successful day out, and great to see some good mates again!
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with Pro Sound L92AA (Sherborne only) and Panasonic VW-VM2SE microphones.
Enjoy!
