The slice is the most common frustration in amateur golf. It’s also one of the most misunderstood.
In this episode of Get Better At Golf, Bill Hobson and PGA Professional Kyle Martin explain why slicing typically begins with setup — not the downswing.
Everything in the golf swing is influenced by what happens before the club moves.
Kyle outlines the key fundamentals that help eliminate the big right miss:
Lead shoulder slightly higher
Spine tilted away from target
Shoulders slightly closed
Ball positioned forward in stance
Most golfers try to fix a slice by swinging harder to the left. That only exaggerates the problem. To reduce slice spin, the club must travel slightly to the right of the target line with proper face control.
Heel strikes also increase slicing spin, so center-face contact is essential.
Kyle demonstrates how to use an alignment stick at the range to verify shoulder tilt and direction before swinging. Practicing setup first creates more consistent swing direction.
The changes may feel uncomfortable at first. That’s normal. Improvement often requires replacing ingrained habits with better fundamentals.
