This talk addresses the critical issue of poor soil quality and its devastating effect on crop yields, particularly for farmers in Lower Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs). Unlike farmers in wealthier nations, those in LEDCs often lack the infrastructure, capital, and specialised equipment necessary to manage soil health effectively, leading to crop failures and food insecurity. This talk will explore how soil degradation exacerbates food shortages and economic struggles in these regions.
To tackle this, I researched using a low-cost, easy-to-use solution powered by AI, TinyML, and IoT. Farmers can use devices like the Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with built-in sensors and a camera module to monitor soil moisture, temperature, and humidity, allowing for real-time soil analysis. This technology will enable farmers to adapt irrigation and watering schedules, preventing soil degradation and increasing crop yields—directly contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
By focusing on affordability, ease of use, and energy efficiency, this solution is tailored for farmers with limited resources and education, making it a practical and accessible approach to combating food shortages in LEDCs.
