Seoul's Fortress Wall of Seoul was the capital city surrounding Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty.
In a narrow sense, it refers to the fortress and gates surrounding Seoul but in a broad sense it refers to the fortress and the space within it. During the Joseon Dynasty.
It was called Hanseong for short and the name as a historic site was set as Seoul Fortress at the time of designation but was changed to the current name in 2011.
Hanyang City Wall was built by King Taejo in 1396 and underwent repairs during the reigns of King Sejong, King Sukjong, and King Sunjo. Although considerable sections were damaged during the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, about 70% of the total length of 18,627m remains as of 2013 as restoration projects have been carried out since the Park Chung-hee administration in 1974.
