01:23 - Five and a half miles in and we are almost here, by this beautiful New Dungeness Light – a beautiful lighthouse that was constructed in 1857 near Sequim, Washington.

01:45 - At the entrance you will see the sign pointing you to the serenity – a peaceful place where we can relax after our long hike.

02:00 - Actually this is the most accessible area and the final reach of the spit. Behind this sign the area is closed to the public.

02:11 - The little shack is the Transformer Building. Fog Signal Building, the Watch Tower, Fog Bell, and the Steam Whistle used to be all here on this field as well.

02:22 - On the left is the house where the lighthouse keepers would stay, in the middle is the Dungeness Lighthouse itself and the little shack on the right is the Oil House storing kerosene with the equipment storage facility.

02:55 - This is the Fog Bell used from 1857 to 1874 to warn ships of navigational hazards like other boats or rocky coastlines during foggy conditions. Since the sound of the bell did not always resonate during these conditions, in 1874 it was replaced with a steam fog signal.

03:30 - The original tower constructed in 1857 was 91 feet tall. In 1927, the top of the tower was removed and the height reduced to 63 feet. This was done due to cracks and deterioration.

03:45 - Did you know that this was the first lighthouse on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the second established in WA after the Cape Disappointment Light that was built in 1856? The Dungeness Lighthouse used a Fresnel Lens illuminating a fixed white light providing navigational aid to the ships at sea. In 1927, the lens was replaced by a rotating one.

In 1976 the light and the fog signal were both automated. The rotating lens was replaced numerous times by different Marine Lanterns and finally in 1998 the Rotating Beacon VRB-25 acrylic lens visible for 22 miles was installed.

5:05 - In 1993, the Dungeness Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

5:10 - Did you know that the lighthouse is staffed year round? You can become one of the lighthouse keepers where you can look after the area for a period of 1 week and guide incoming tourists all the way to the tip of the lighthouse.

05:33 - As a keeper you will reside in this house accommodating up to 8 people. Anybody can sign up about a year in advance due to a high demand. To do so 1st, you have to become a New Dungeness Light Station Association or NDLSA member by paying a small fee, finding available dates, submitting a small deposit, and finally paying about $450 for a week’s stay. The total will be about $550 a person.

08:05 - Keep in mind that as a keeper your duties include raising and lowering the flag, watering the lawn, mowing, polishing bras inside the tower, and simply enjoying nature. You do have to supply your own food for the week. This is one in a lifetime opportunities that is definitely worth trying.
