HYDE PARK, Ohio (Perry Schaible) -- Everything produced by Busken Bakery is made at the main location on Madison Avenue. Employees spend nearly 16 hours a day baking donuts, danishes, cookies and cakes.
Busken billboards around the Tri-State read "have a 'crumby' day". At Halloween they read "Booskens" or "love bites" for Valentine's Day. They all advertise the same thing, Busken bakery's famous iced cookies.
Dan Busken says when people see the smiley face cookie, they know it's Busken. The cookie making process starts with the mixers, which pull and add each ingredient one by one.
The cookies are made with sugar and a touch of almond. They're mixed in a giant mixer and then 600 pounds of cookie dough is rolled over to another machine. "So, this is how it starts. A big, big giant bowl of cookie dough, it goes into the machine there and this machine cuts the cookie, pushes it through a round press," says Dan Busken.
The cookies bake for 20 minutes, cool and then are taken to the icing room where they are flipped upside down onto a re-purposed donut icing machine.
The popular snack cools for several hours. Then a baker uses a hand press with edible ink to stamp the iconic smiley face. The cookies are packaged by hand and sent out.
