I was born on January 24, 1860, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was the fifth of the ten children to John Henry and Mary Gertrude Kroger. We lived above a dry goods store that my parents owned. Unfortunately, due to the economic downturn in 1873, we had to shut the store down and I started working at the age of 13 to support the family. In 2017, Kroger got voted as one of America's favourite supermarket chains.
